Why is the fifth wheel trailer called such?
The fifth wheel trailer got its name because of the way the RV camper is hitched to the towing vehicle. The fifth wheel trailer is attached to the truck bed by a fifth wheel hitch. This hitch extends from a plate over the towing vehicle to the camper, making the fifth wheel trailer look as though it is resting on the vehicle for support.
