If you are looking forward to doing some trail riding with your ATV, you have to get your quad to the trail. For most guys that means loading up and hauling it there. ATV loading ramps make that job a lot easier.
There's a right way and a wrong way to load your quad. Doing it right requires some know-how. If you aren't careful, you might put your equipment and yourself at risk. Here's what to do to load and secure your quad on a trailer or pick-up truck.
If you're loading your quad onto a trailer, be sure to attach the trailer to the tow vehicle before loading up your ATV. That will prevent the trailer from rocking or tipping during loading.
Use only those ramps with a loading capacity that can handle the combined weight of the four wheeler, and any equipment attached to it. Remember that if you ride your ATV into place, your weight has to be counted into the total as well.
Riding your quad up ramps can be dangerous. Accidents occur when loading isn't done the right way. So, if you do load by riding up the ramps, take precautions by wearing protective gear like boots, gloves, goggles, and helmet.
Load in first gear or as low a gear as possible to go up the ramp. Be sure to avoid jerky starting or stopping while you're on the ramp. Never ever approach a ramp at a high rate of speed. This could possibly cause the ramp to buckle or slam into the back of your truck or trailer.
The safest way to load an ATV is using a winch. This method allows you stand clear of the quad while giving you much more control over the speed and more precision in the actual loading process.
Once the ATV has been successfully loaded, take a little time to balance out the weight over the vehicle's axle. This ensures that the load is evenly distributed. Next, set the brake on the four wheeler and secure it to the bed of the trailer or truck. Use tie down straps to secure it
Plan on putting two straps on the front of the ATV, and two straps on the back. Then ratchet the straps down tightly. They should be tight enough that your quad is immobilized, even if you should try to rock it. And finally, the tires should look as if they are under load.
Lastly, loop any excess lengths of strap so it won't flap around or drag while you are on the move. Then you're ready to hit the road and head for the trail of your choice with your ATV.
